Gunnar "Jarn Hamarr" Sigurdson

Birth Place: TjĂžlling, Vestfold, Norway

Born: 845AD

Youngest son of Sigurd Ivarson , a wealthy land owner who had gained great favour with King Halfdan the Black of Vestfold. It was in 865, as his older brother Leif was to inherit his fathers wealth, Gunnar left with his father's sword, the clothes on his back and a handful of coin searching for ways to gain notoriety and fortune.

Gunnar’s temper often got him into trouble luckily his temper was less than his skill with a sword. Fighting and drinking his way through towns and villages Gunnar heard rumours of a great army of Danes planning to sail west to a land called England. Gunnar found a trade ship in Kaupang that was heading to Tønsberg in Denmark in a couple of days.

But that same day, in Kaupang, Gunnar met the woman who was to become his wife. Ljufa Brundottir a fisherman’s daughter and a talented archer. They fell in love and quickly married and Ljufa joined Gunnar on their adventure to the west. Ljufa presented Gunnar with her father’s long spear as a wedding gift. A gift that would become, along with Gunnar’s skill, feared across the lands.

In Tønsberg, while preparing to board the ships to sail west Gunnar met a fellow warrior with whom he shared a likeness. This warrior was Bjørn Halfdan, who, as it turns out was the bastard son on Sigurd Ivarson, making him Gunnar's half borther. After discoving this revelation the two men drank and shared tales until morning.

Gunnar and Bjørn joined with Jarl Magnus Gunnarson and his warband called Ormsheim. They boarded the ships and set sail to meet the Dane fleet and cross the seas to England. Upon reaching England, Gunnar and the other warriors lead by Magnus along with the rest Great Heathen Army were sucessful in capturing Jovik after defeating the Northumbrian army.

Gunnar has been a loyal warrior, friend and trusted advisor to Magnus ever since.

Gunnar has a passion for smithing and wood crafts which he started from a young age with his Grandfather Ivar Valdarson a blacksmith and woodsman. Gunnar even built his forge at a settlement in the Shire Oak wapentake to supply weapons and tools to other Norsemen and Danes in exchange for silver. But Gunnar’s true passion still lies in combat and fighting with his new brothers by his side. He is talented with sword and with spear, with a fearsome temper and a lust for blood.
