Gunnar "Jarn Hamarr" Sigurdson

Birth Place: TjĂžlling, Vestfold, Norway

Born: 845AD

Youngest son of Sigurd Ivarson , a wealthy land owner who had gained great favour with King Halfdan the Black of Vestfold. It was in 865, as his older brother Leif was to inherit his fathers wealth, Gunnar left with his father's sword, the clothes on his back and a handful of coin to make a life for himself in the lands to the west.

Gunnar's cousin Arn Trygvasson left his family to join him drinking and fighting their way west. The pair gained notoriety, Arn for his drinking and Gunnar for his wit and both for their skills in battle. It was Arn, who in a night of drunken revelry, split Gunnar’s shield with his axe, earning Arn the nickname Strongaxe.

It was in Kaupang that Gunnar met the woman who was to become his wife. Ljufa Brundottir a fisherman’s daughter. They fell in love and quickly married and Ljufa joined Gunnar and Arn on their adventure to the west.

In Tønsberg, while preparing to board the ships to sail west Gunnar met a fellow warrior with whom he shared a likeness. This warrior was Bjørn Halfdan, who it turns out was the bastard son on Sigurd Ivarson, making him Gunnar's half borther. After discoving this revelation the two men drank and shared tales until morning. Bjørn decided to join Gunnar and Arn in future battles. The three men vowed to fight side by side.

Gunnar, Arn and Bjørn joined with Magnus "The Ruthles" Gunnarson and his men and boarded the ships and set sail to meet the Dane fleet to cross the seas to the West. Upon reaching England, Gunnar and the other warriors lead by Magnus along with the rest Great Heathen Army were sucessful in capturing Jovik after defeating the Northumbrian army.

Gunnar has been a loyal warrior, friend and trusted advisor to Magnus ever since.

Gunnar has a passion for smithing and wood crafts which he started from a young age with his Grandfather Ivar Valdarson a blacksmith and woodsman. Gunnar even built his forge at a settlement in the Shire Oak wapentake to supply weapons and tools to other Norsemen and Danes in exchange for silver. But Gunnar’s true passion still lies in combat and fighting with his new brothers by his side. He is talented with sword and with spear, with a fearsome temper and a lust for blood.
